I was waiting on a plane in Columbus, Ohio going to Nashville on my way to Tampa, Florida when I spied a woman carrying a guitar. Later she passed my seat on the plane with no guitar and I asked her where it was. That brief encounter was the beginning of a new friendship. She gave me her "Live at Purple Moon" cd and we fond that we had a common best friend in Tampa. I plan to attend next concert when she plays there. What a sweetheart and great performer.

Laurie I had never heard you or of you although I listen to this Anericana folk music all my life until last night when I found a song while looking for Kate Wolf on ITunes. Three hours and 3 glasses of wine later I was still listening to all of your wonderful songs of innocence and world weary wisdom and humour. Thank you.

My husband and I heard you this summer at the Fairfield Studio House Concerts in Shreveport, and now I feel like you are a friend because listening to your music is like having a long conversation with a best friend. Your song about your brother Danny is a gift to all who have lost loved ones through suicide. I look forward to your return to Shreveport in the future. Hope the Texas gig and potluck supper went well!

I'm looking forward to seeing/hearing/joining in with your singing -- it's so easy to chime in and pretend it's all 'live!' because you sound alive when you're singing your own songs --and even those of other great singer/songwriters like yourself. Harmony House is a great venue full of people who appreciate honesty in songs -- you provide! See you there!

Just met you in Fairfax, CA. in Marin County at a curiosity shop.
You reminded me how much I miss working with musicians. I was the sound guy at the Iron Horse Music Hall '90--'94.
Yeah, you reminded me why I liked that gig.

Hi Laurie My freind Mark sent me the link to the song about your brother, Danny. My brother died last year and I still hurt. Your words in this song and the way you sing it-have been of an immediate comfort. I can see my brother smile that smile. Thank you so much

Hi Laurie, We met last year, on a damp and foggy morning, when you stopped at The Jesse James Antique Mall, on I-29, in St. Joseph, Missouri, on your way home. I told you I was a native of San Diego, we discussed California. Been a fan of your music ever since. Hope to see you again, maybe at a concert. You are so talented, what a story teller, such a haunting voice. It was a pleasure meeting you.

A couple of years ago you called my pawn shop in Lincoln looking for an IPOD. It took me a minute to figure out you were not the typical caller, but an out of town musician with your music on your lost IPOD. I then realized you told me your name and I recognized it as the girl from the CD I had kept from this pawn shop a few years earlier. I had kept it because it was live in Lincoln and it looked real.
Anyway, I had not seen it but said I would be looking for it. I am sorry I never found it.
However, that inspired me to go home that night and check out the "Purple Moon" CD right away (probably for the first time.) It was VERY 'REAL.' I really enjoyed it. Thank you.
I only write this to you now because I've come across your CD again while filing my music into my computer. I got curious again and Googled you, and here I am. Sampled some more of your music and I really enjoy it. Have to order a CD or two. Really appreciate a 'real' artist who keeps doing her thing w/o giving in to the machine.
Just my story of my brush with an artist. Maybe not interesting to others - but a cool little story I'll always remember.

A couple years ago you called my pawn shop in Lincoln to look for an IPOD. Eventually I fugured out you were trying to tell me you were a songwriter and had some of your music on it. Then something clicked and I realized I was talking to the girl on the CD I had always kept after finding it a few years earlier at this same pawn shop. I had kept it because it was live in Lincoln and it looked like 'real' music. I thought the whole thing so strange. I went home and listened to that CD for probably the first time. It was 'real.'
Thanks for being nice on the phone. Sorry I never came across your IPOD - I did keep looking.
Was just reminded of this tonight as I came across your CD again while filing my music into my computer. Had to listen again before it got in there. Looking at getting another CD or 2 and hoping you perform around here again.

Well I think last time I saw you was! I was looking through a friends list on FB and your name popped out like a neon sign. Last time I heard you sing you sat at our table (coffee shop?) and sang a melody into a cassette player then used that as a background vocal for a song you were working on. I was moved by your voice and style not to mention your ability to let it all hang out. Happy to hear that voice again and see how you've grown as an artist. Just to prod your memory-we had a baby girl just a few months before Rachel was born and lived on S.23rd. you used to walk by and we'd share parenting stories... I will keep an eye out for any performances in the LA area! Peace.

Friend of Jerry Rau, and Jerry Rau and Band, I am so pleased to come here you tomorrow night in Blaine, MN on Jerry's Invitation...My son Glenn Allan Hallowell enjoyed Jerry's music from age 3 on in the Twin Cities to Age 39 when he passed away July 24, 2008. Jerry's music helped us through his 7.5 month bout with Cancer Treatment at Fairview Hospital in South Minneapolis near Seward Cafe. I am so glad to hear you are part of this month's tribute to Daniel Pearl. I look forward to your house concert, Octobe 26, Wednesday Night. Music/and natural ethnomusicology was Glenn's passion.

Hi Laurie, we met 14 years ago at Hickory Pointe townhomes in Hendersonville, where we both lived. You and your girls had supper with my wife and 2 kids. Your time in Nashville had just begun and mine was ending. Just yesterday I listened to the tape you gave me recorded live at the purple moon. As I listened, I hoped in my heart that you found success and happiness... looking at your website I think you have! I'm very happy for you. Be blessed, Tom and Stephanie Barger

Hi Laurie,
I just discovered your website and listened to some of your music, WOW! I can't believe how great you sound. It's was also a blast from the past looking at some of your pictures from back in the days of Irving Jr High and remembering all the parties we attended back in those days.
I just moved into a house on 17th and Perkins Blvd which is close to your old house and hope you can come and do a show at Stransky Park down on the corner someday, it's a local park which put's on concerts during the summer, kind of in your old neighborhood at 17th and Harrison.

Glad to see your doing well and wish you the best.

February 27, 2011

When you were 18, your voice sometimes sounded as though you were endlessly old because you could do things with it that only decades of experience made possible. Now, your voice sounds like you are painfully young, with almost magical control and taste. No matter how much money you make at this, your work is as good as it gets. I am so glad to have discovered your music again.

I bought your CD (the child...) when I was touring down around Atlanta about 10 years ago and have listened to it on and off. We played at the same singe-songwriter deal somewhere down there. I thought I would google you to see what you have been doing. Seeing your pic make me feel like I found a long lost friend. Keep up the good work, my friend. I am listening right now to the CD and it really speaks to me. You are a doll. Thanks for your art.

I knew you when you lived on "A" Street in Lincoln. We lived at 23rd & A. I just heard you on KOIS radio and was delighted to hear your sweet voice and songs! I think about your precious little daughter that rode the bus downtown and we would sit together and chat way back in the 70's or was it the 8o's? Ha! I just wanted to say hello again after all these years.

Hi Jane! So nice to hear from you! It was the '80s! That precious girl is all grown up now. That was a peaceful time in my life, no car, just one little baby to take care of... very sweet times... I am playing near Lincoln at the PlainSong Festival on Oct. 2nd in Sprague, NE. Be sure to say hello if you can make it! blessings, Laurie

Hi laurie,
You're not gonna believe this! The internet is the best worldly way to trace friends anywhere....This is Sophia from France. I had met you when you sang in Lincoln at this coffeehouse on Thursday night in Lincoln back in 95-97. Was it the Purple Moon.? You had a gig and you let me join in to do a couple songs...Remember? Probably not without a pick...
How did I find you here on the net?
Well as I was doing research on a dear voice of mine, the epithomy of California for me, KATE WOLF, I went under artists who covered KW and there you were....

I still remember your songs on the fireflies..
You can hear some of my stuff on and email me at .

I'm very happy you're doing well in Nashville! Getting on your CD now..Lots of inner light!

We miss seeing you in Sioux Falls! Please come again; it would be such a treat. Several new venues; the little city is really changing. Miss you too. Please hurry back to Sioux Falls!

Listening to "The Child" struggling for hope in my own life, mankind. Won't you write a song to help me understand the humanity that coould cut a person's head off with a knife or people who can dance in the street for joy after the murder of 8 students?

Hi Laurie! my friend Andy just told me about you and said he's transfixed and no wonder! you have a wonderfully compelling voice that resonates with warmth, kindness and beauty - i'm really surprised you haven't been snatched up by some major label - or that the labels aren't fighting over you - maybe you are being protected so you are free tomake your own path. i'm so loving 'my heaven' (mary poppins was my favorite back when!). and i love the way you've done a whole tribute to kate wolf. anyhoos, i wish you the best and hope to see you out on the road someday. nancy k
